Dr. Goldman named Chairman of Neurology at University of Rochester
Steven Goldman, MD, PhD, was named Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester (UR) School of Medicine and Dentistry, effective October 1. Dr. Goldman, who has been with the UR since 2003, is internationally recognized for advancing the understanding of stem cells and their role in treating human disease. Dr. Goldman will continue as Chief of the Neurology Department's Division of Cell and Gene Therapy and as Professor of Neurological Surgery. He has also been the Dean Zutes Chair in Biology of the Aging Brain in the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, which he co-directs with Dr. Maiken Nedergaard. Dr. Goldman took over this position from Robert C. Griggs, MD, who had led the department since 1986.
New members named to National Neurology Advisory Council
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) appointed four new members to its major advisory panel, the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council. Director Story Landis, PhD, formally introduced the new members at the Council's September 2008 meeting. The new members will serve through July 2012 and include Emery N. Brown, MD, PhD, Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Professor of Computational Neuroscience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School; Robert M. Friedlander, MD, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Associate Professor in Surgery (Neurosurgery) at Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women's Hospital; Katie Hood, MBA, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research (MJFF); and Louis J. Ptácek, MD, Director of the Division of Neurogenetics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.
