This book provides a very complete overview of the current status of the understanding of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a neurotransmitter. Additionally, most chapters present an overview of studies that may lead to this current understanding. The first chapter is by Eugene Roberts, author of one of the three initial articles published in 1950 that identified the presence of GABA in the brain. He not only traces some of the steps involved in that early discovery, but he also addresses the impact that political and social upheaval can have on the course of scientific inquiry. He concludes with a compelling view of the role of GABA and inhibitory systems in adaptive neural system function. In this view, the activation of inhibition by GABA enables organisms to explore the full range of response options.
