53RD ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AAN
There was a large number of attendees at this year’s 53rd annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in Philadelphia. Of the 9,553 registrants, 27.5% were from 77 countries outside the United States. As with previous meetings, the largest international contingents came from Canada and Western Europe (table). Argentina led the Latin American countries with 86 registrants. From the Middle East, Israel had 61 attendees. Japan (39 registrants) and Korea (37 registrants) led in the Far East. Saudi Arabia sent the largest number of neurologists (23) from the Arab world, and Australia (23) was the largest contributor from Oceania. Poland, which led the number of attendees from Eastern Europe, had 16 registrants, while only four registrants came from sub-Saharan Africa: two from South Africa, and two from Nigeria. International participation in the AAN meeting parallels international membership and international submissions to Neurology. Philadelphia attracted even more US registrants, while the percentage of international registration declined. The World Congress of Neurology in London was held only 8 weeks later than the AAN meeting, which may have reduced the number of international registrants to the 53rd annual meeting.

NEW PRESIDENT OF THE EFNS
The European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) has a new president effective June 1, 2001.
