The authors have compiled a diverse text on functional neuroimaging as it is applied to the epilepsies. After a general overview and definition of terms, the next four chapters deal with SPECT. Subsequent topics include radiotracers, PET, radioligands, fMRI, EEG-MR, and MRS. The organization is consistent across the topical groups, in that the first chapter of each group addresses methodologies and pitfalls of interpretation and application. Although some parts may be too difficult for the average reader, these are all excellent and the writing is uniformly clear. The “how to” chapter on EEG-MR by Krakow was an unexpected plus. The next chapter in each section is devoted to what is actually being measured by the technique. These are somewhat variable in scope. The chapter by Theodore was a successful synthesis of experimental seizure data from numerous sources with human PET data. Others reflect more personal experience.
