To understand the experience and identify drivers and mitigating factors of burnout and well-being among US neurologists, investigators Miyasaki et al. applied an inductive data analysis to free text comments from the 2016 American Academy of Neurology survey of burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being. The authors found that neurologists mentioned workload > professional identity > time spent on insurance and government mandates when describing burnout. The authors suggested that interventions focusing on individual physicians such as time management and stress reduction courses can be helpful in preventing burnout. Dr. Sethi disagrees with this assertion, stating that electronic health records are here to stay and so are the numerous government regulations. However, Miyasaki et al. believe that their study and others have been impactful since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently announced plans to conduct a “listening” tour of providers to reduce regulations while increasing the time spent with patients.
