Epidemiologic studies are critical to understand stroke incidence and mortality rates. Rannikmäe et al.1 provide a unique analysis of the accuracy of health record administrative stroke codes by combining outpatient, inpatient, and death records. Authors leveraged the power of the United Kingdom Biobank (UKB), a large, prospective, longitudinal study of British volunteers. They identified primary stroke codes from hospital admissions, primary care and specialist visits, and death certificates in 17,249 UKB participants from Scotland. They created and reviewed vignettes of relevant medical records to confirm diagnosis of stroke.
