Robert L. Barchi, MD, PhD, named 20th President of Rutgers University.
Dr. Robert L. Barchi was named as the 20th President of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, effective September 1, 2012. Dr. Barchi comes to Rutgers from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he is currently President. Prior to Jefferson, Dr. Barchi was at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the faculty from 1972, and served as that University's Provost and Chief Academic Officer.
Dr. Barchi said his focus would be on transforming Rutgers University into a public–private hybrid that serves the diverse population of New Jersey, attracts students from other states, and becomes a vital engine for the state and national economy. “We have to be an importer of intellect, not an exporter of intellect,” he said. Dr. Barchi also noted that his priorities will include increasing diversity at Rutgers “from the top down.” This will include expanding areas such as life sciences research, looking for ways to transform intellectual property into economic benefit, and increasing the school's profile and philanthropic relationships.
Dr. Barchi has remained active as an award-winning teacher and as a researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology as well as a clinical neurologist. He specializes in neuromuscular disease. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy …
