Columbia neurologist named President of the NMA
Carolyn B. Britton, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, was installed as the 109th president of the National Medical Association (NMA) on July 29. The NMA represents the interests of more than 30,000 African-American physicians and the patients they serve. Dr. Britton is the first neurologist and the ninth woman to be named President of the NMA. She has long been active in the NMA, having served as chair of the Neurology/Neurosurgery Section, Chair of the Finance Committee, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and President-Elect. Dr. Britton plans to focus on cancer and mental health disparities. “Dr. Britton’s elevation to the organization’s highest office appropriately recognizes her many outstanding accomplishments and contributions both within and outside the NMA,” says Timothy A. Pedley, MD, the Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Neurology and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Physicians and Surgeons. “The Department of Neurology and the Neurological Institute of New York take great pride in Dr. Britton’s leadership roles at the NMA and congratulate her on this outstanding achievement.”
Dr. Lisak elected to the Royal College of Physicians
Dr. Robert Lisak, chair of the Department of Neurology at Wayne State University’s (WSU) School of Medicine, was recently elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians “by distinction.” Dr. Lisak’s election is one of the highest honors the organization bestows. “This award is not only a great honor for Dr. Lisak, but it is a great honor for WSU’s School of Medicine and Department of Neurology,” commented Dr. Joseph Dunbar, Associate Vice-President for Research at WSU.
