CHANGES
In October, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) announced the names of 65 new members, raising its total active membership to 1,501. Five individuals were elected to foreign associate membership, bringing that total to 82. With another 68 members holding emeritus status, the total IOM membership is now 1,651.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and influential individuals to the Institute of Medicine,” said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. “Members are elected through a highly selective process that recognizes people who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. Election is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health.”
New members from the field of neurology or neuroscience include Francisco Gonzalez-Scarano, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Dilip V. Jeste, MD, Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging; Director, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging; and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, University of California, San Diego, and VA San Diego Healthcare System; Robert L. Martuza, MD, Higgins Professor of Neurosurgery, Harvard Medical School, and Chief, Neurosurgical Service, MA General Hospital, Boston; John C.
