Donald Winston Paty passed away on December 8, 2004, at age 68 after a 10-year battle with lymphoma. Despite a bone marrow transplant, his lymphoma recurred and chemotherapy was not successful. He is survived by his wife JoAnne and their four children, Britt, Beverly, Breay, and Blake.
Don was born in China to US missionaries. His father raised enough money through the Southern Methodist Church in the United States to build a 300-bed hospital in Changzhon. Don returned to that hospital in 2001 with his son Breay, now an endocrinologist, and his nephew Phillip, an oncologist, perhaps to celebrate his father’s memory and reconnect with his birthplace.
Don moved to the United States in 1943 and completed his education in New York and Georgia. He received his medical diploma from Emory in 1962, followed by an internship at Duke and a residency at Emory. In-between he took a …
