On February 22, 2004, Dr. Labe C. Scheinberg, Professor of Neurology and former Dean of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, died of congestive heart failure. He was 78 years old and had been in failing health for several years. A compassionate physician, brilliant bedside teacher, respected scientist, and leader in the clinical management of multiple sclerosis (MS), Labe made major contributions to the clinical and scientific literature. He will be remembered for his work in establishing the model of comprehensive care centers to treat the issues facing patients with MS.
Labe was born in Memphis, TN, on December 11, 1925. He attended 1 year of college at Southwestern at Memphis in 1943. He served in the Navy for 1 year in the V-12 program, and then attended the University of North Carolina, graduating with honors in 1945. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and graduated, AOA, in 1948. A rotating internship at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago was followed by 1 year of psychiatry residency at Elgin State Hospital in Illinois in 1950. He then served as a psychiatrist in the Air Force and became Director of Neuropsychiatry at Barksdale Air force Base …
