In early 2001, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) adopted a position in support of guidelines adopted in 2000 by the NIH, which allowed for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). The embryos were obtained from fertility clinics whose patients had discontinued their fertility treatments. At that time, the AAN did not endorse somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also known as therapeutic cloning. Three developments compelled the AAN to revisit its stance on these issues. First, the NIH guidelines were changed by presidential order in August 2001 to prohibit federal funding for research involving embryonic stem cell lines not already discovered.
