Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD),1 a neurodegenerative disorder presenting with a spectrum of behavior changes, executive disturbances, or aphasia, is often unrecognized. Patients with FTLD are many times considered to have a psychiatric disorder or Alzheimer disease (AD). Imaging studies and psychometric testing can be normal at an early stage.2 CSF biomarkers have been considered in the diagnosis of FTLD. One study found that the combination of CSF tau and amyloid β(1–42) (Aβ42) provided assistance in the diagnosis of FTLD.4 We investigated CSF tau and Aβ42 in FTLD compared with age-matched AD patients and cognitively healthy control subjects.
