The Cognitive and Neural Bases of Spatial Neglect, edited by Karnath, Milner, and Vallar, is a 400-page, 27-chapter exploration of spatial neglect and related disorders such as spatial perception and exploration, extinction, attention, unconscious processing, and the primary sensory deficits of hemianopsia and somatosensory loss. The book is the product of a research conference in Como, Italy, in 2000.
The volume begins with a historical introduction by Heilman, Watson, and Valenstein, pioneers in the field. This chapter would stand well on its own as a review of neglect. Section 2 deals with the anatomy and neurophysiology of neglect, including both human and animal research. Section 3 includes four chapters on spatial representations, including reference to individual (“egocentric”), near, and far space. Section 4 explores sensory versus motor aspects of neglect, including discussion of intentional neglect, visual illusions, the role of hemianopsia in neglect, and the ability of patients with right hemisphere injury to navigate in space.
