Brain Tumors: An Encyclopedic Approach

This updated encyclopedic approach to brain tumors is an excellent text and resource for clinicians treating primary brain tumors. There is a clear slant towards neurosurgical management, but it is an appropriate text for neurologists, neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists.
This book is a pleasure both to read and simply to browse through. The text is organized into two sections: 22 chapters on Basic Principles and 27 chapters on Specific Tumors. The only thing that I found a bit disconcerting was the fact that the section on specific tumors starts with the management of recurrent gliomas and meningiomas. The individual chapters are well written and have been carefully updated since the first edition. The summation of key points and highlighted key references for each chapter is extremely useful. Several chapters merit specific comment. There is an excellent new chapter on the use of gene therapy in the treatment of brain tumors that nicely summarizes the preclinical background for this approach. Several chapters in the Basic Principles section provide excellent clinical and neurologic information that is useful in the day-to-day management of brain tumor patients: Chapter 10, Brain edema, increased intracranial pressure and vascular effects of human brain tumors; Chapter 12, Neuro-ophthalmology of brain tumors; Chapter 13, Epilepsy associated with brain tumors; and Chapter 15, Anesthesia and intensive care management …
