David C. Hess has been named chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Hess had been interim chairman of the department since February 2000. His research interests include acute therapeutic intervention in stroke. Of his new role Dr. Hess says, “Our goal in the department of neurology and the MCG Neurosciences Center is to excel in clinical care, teaching, and research and to become the premier academic neurology department and neuroscience center in the southeast. We have a dedicated, hard-working, and outstanding faculty.”

As mentioned in the July 24 CPC, I asked readers to submit recollections of their most influential teachers in neurology. I recently received a letter from Dr. Martin R. Steiner of Houston Neurology Associates who recalls his mentor, Dr. Morris B. Bender. He writes:
“Dr. Morris B. Bender was chief at Mt. Sinai Hospital from 1951–1973. Although he retired as chairman of the neurology department in 1973, he remained in active practice until his sudden death on January 23, 1983.
