Gerald D. Fischbach, MD, was named Columbia University’s Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences, effective February 2001. Dr. Fischbach comes from the NIH where he had been the director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) since 1998. At Columbia, Dr. Fischbach will head a division that includes four health science professional schools and 27 academic departments.
Of his new position, Fischbach stated: “This is an extraordinary time in biomedical and health sciences. Advances at all levels of analysis, ranging from molecules to behavior, have begun to revolutionize the practice of medicine. Investigators throughout Columbia have contributed enormously to this revolution. It is a privilege to join this distinguished faculty and help shape its course in the coming years.”
Solomon “Nico” L. Moshe, MD, was elected president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) in December 2000. Dr. Moshe is a professor of neurology, neuroscience, and pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. An internationally renowned physician and scientist, his research focuses on the causes of age-related differences in epilepsy and on the effect of seizures on the developing brain.
Robert S. Fisher, MD, PhD, is now chief of the Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and Maslah Saul, MD, professor of neurology at Stanford Medical Center. Dr. Fisher comes from the Barrow Neurological Institute where he was chair of neurology. Dr. Fisher is a leading expert in the field of epilepsy and has held prominent positions such as president of the American Epilepsy Society and the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona.
