Others have used MRS to study AED effects, with results similar to those of Petroff et al.4,5⇓ However, blood flow mapping and other functional neuroimaging techniques have been used more often to study the effects of various AED.6 Most such studies describe only changes in one brain chemical or function occurring after AED use. Many AED-induced functional alterations may be irrelevant to antiseizure actions and to adverse effects of the AED. While a significant correlation of improved seizure control and an AED-induced functional alteration suggest an antiseizure action, it is essential to establish that alteration mediates improved seizure control and not merely a “fellow traveler” with the factor that improves seizure control.
