To the Editor:
In response to Boman et al.’s article, we believe their results have no convincing agreement with the data presented by us on the association between C pneumoniae infection and the development of MS.1,2⇓ We are currently aware of three additional groups besides Boman et al. and us that have studied this association; the data are presented in the table. There are marked differences in these studies in terms of the detection of C pneumoniae by PCR. This is not surprising as there are marked difficulties in the PCR detection of C pneumoniae in atherosclerotic lesions. We are interested in working with other groups whenever possible in order to determine if these differences are methodologic or represent differences in the patient groups studied. Thus, we have sent CSF specimens (positive and negative for C pneumoniae) from our patients to Boman for PCR analysis in his laboratory.
