Allison et al. used functional MRI (fMRI) to examine interhemispheric interactions in motor control.1 They found that along with cerebral activation contralateral to hand movement, there was also significant ipsilateral deactivation in subjects performing a finger-thumb opposition task. They postulate that transcallosal inhibition may be responsible for these findings.
We recently used fMRI to study seven normal right-handed subjects and three right-handed patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum, who have been previously described,2 to investigate transcallosal influences on ipsilateral deactivation.
