This issue ends my 10-year term as editor-in-chief of Neurology. In an accompanying article, Robert Joynt introduces my successor, Robert C. (Berch) Griggs, whose watch begins in January 1997.
In a chapter for the "History of the Journal, Neurology, Golden Anniversary Volume of the American Academy of Neurology," I described the founding of the journal and its early years. [1] By way of summary, the Academy was founded in 1948 and the first issue of its official journal, Neurology, was published in January 1951 with Russell N. DeJong as the editor-in-chief. Initially a bi-monthly, it became a monthly in 1953. Although DeJong was editor for 26 years, an Academy bylaws change limited the term of future editors to 10 years (six years renewable for an additional four years). Lewis P. (Bud) Rowland succeeded DeJong, serving a highly successful 10 years from 1977 through 1986. Rowland summarized his decade, as I am now doing with mine, in his last issue. [2]
The growth of the journal during my term continued the trend of the Rowland years. During his first year as editor in 1977, there were 460 manuscripts submitted, whereas in his last year, 1986, there were 1,090, an increase of 137%. As indicated in Table 1, the journal went from 1,064 submissions in my first year (1987) to 1,921 submissions in 1995, an 81% increase over those nine years. To date, …
