CONCLUSIONS:According to MS lesion literature, nodular Gd-enhancement may represent an earlier stage than shell Gd-enhancement, which is consistent with the observed R2* reduction and QSM unchanging in nodular lesion. In the later stage of shell Gd-enhancement, microglia/macrophages clear myelin debris and some may also carry iron promoting continued inflammation, which is consistent with the observed susceptibility increase in shell lesions. These results suggest that GRE MRI can capture early stages of lesion activity and provides more tissue specific information than gadolinium enhancement.
