The neurology community has lost an effective advocate and leader, an outstanding clinical neurologist and role model for the disabled. Ken Viste, past President of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the current Chair of the AAN Foundation, died precipitously August 21, 2005, from complications of gallbladder cancer at age 63 years. His ability to overcome obstacles, boundless energy, and commitment to all aspects of neurology have left an indelible mark on us all. But to those of us who knew him as a friend, his loss leaves a void in our lives not likely to mend.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, Ken was a down-to-earth neurologist with limitless vigor and an infectious grin who touched the lives of many people. Paralyzed at age 13 years from the waist down by polio, his physical limitations compromised neither his energy nor accomplishments too numerous to describe. Those selected here provide only the barest outline of a man's life well lived.
