I am honored to be asked to write an obituary notice on the sad loss of a long-time colleague, Doctor Dragomir Vuckovich, a distinguished physician and professor of child and adult neurology, known affectionately to his friends as "Mike." At the time of his death, on May 2, 1996, at the age of 68, Doctor Vuckovich was Professor and Chairman and Director of the Residency Training Program, Department of Neurology, Finch University of Health Sciences, Chicago Medical School. He also held joint appointments as Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the same university, and he was an attending neurologist at the North Chicago Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born on October 27, 1927 in Bileca, Yugoslavia, the son of General Alexander and Anka Vuckovich, he served in the Royal Yugoslav Army under General Milhailvic fighting against Nazis and communists from 1942 to 1945. After the War, he began his medical studies in England, having completed his preprofessional education in Yugoslavia and Italy. He attended medical school at the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England, 1947 to 1953 and graduated with a medical degree in 1953. He completed internships, known as "house appointments" in the United Kingdom, in surgery, neurology, and psychiatry at the United Birmingham Hospitals in 1954 and proceeded to a Residency ("Registrar appointment") in Pediatrics at Birmingham Children's Hospital, 1954 to 1955. …
